Finding Joy in January: 5 Simple Changes

I’ve always loved the New Year. Not as a time for a total overhaul, but as a chance to gently refresh.
This year, my word is gentle — and more than anything, that means being gentler with myself.

So here are five small things that have been bringing me joy this January.

1. Becoming a Chartered Engineer

Just before Christmas, I received the incredible news that I passed my professional review and became a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Returning to work in January with that knowledge has felt like wearing a quiet but flashing gold badge of honour. After years of striving, doubting, and pushing myself, I finally feel able to let go of the need to prove myself — and to say a very fond goodbye to imposter syndrome.

This milestone means so much to me.
Go me.

2. Starting The Artist’s Way

I was recently recommended The Artist’s Way by one of my favourite content creators, Jen Lefforge. I’ve been listening to it on audio, and while I’m still a little apprehensive (and not entirely sure it’s “my thing”), I’ve committed to the process.

Surprisingly, it’s already helping me uncover and understand parts of myself I’ve been ignoring for years. It’s early days, but I can feel mental ground being gently broken — and that alone brings me joy. Most of all, it gives me permission to carve out a small pocket of time that is just for me.

3. A New Way of Working at Home

One of the biggest changes I’ve made this January is how I tackle jobs at home. I now work in 90-minute blocks, followed by proper rest — and it’s been a game changer.

No more hours of overdoing it and feeling rubbish afterwards. I set a timer, focus fully, and stop when it ends. Strangely, the restriction has made me more productive and more content.

My home feels calm, organised, and easy to maintain — everything has a place, and that brings an unexpected sense of peace.

4. Making My Home Cosier

Alongside that, I treated myself to a few pieces from the home store — something I don’t usually do. Warm winter throws, soft cushions, and little touches that have transformed my living room into a cosy retreat.

It now feels like a space designed to carry me gently through winter.

5. Booking Another Disney Trip

Finally — and perhaps most joyfully — I booked another Disney trip before I’d even unpacked from the last one. Something I’ve never done before, and something I have absolutely no regrets about.

Knowing there’s a Disney countdown ticking away — now less than nine months — takes the sharp edge off dark evenings and cold mornings.

Beyond these five things, I’m loving the slower moments:
reading in bed, paint-by-numbers (I’m not very good, but it’s fun), salt baths, hot-tub nights, long dog walks, and listening to audiobooks in a tidy, calm home — all while doing a job I truly love.

I think it’s safe to say… I’m finding the joy in January.

What small things are bringing you joy right now?
