As the Summer nears its end, I find myself at a bit of a loose end. I don’t need to rush out to M&S and part with a substantial amount of money for trousers, shirts, school shirts and trainers. Along with a mad dash to the uniform shop for all the branded school kit that is required. No more looking for pencil cases and lunch boxes!
It’s a relief to be off the treadmill, but for the past 16 years my Sundays have been taken up with the laundry and ironing of uniforms and preparing for the week of lunchbox dinners ahead. Not having to do this task, whilst great, has created a bit of a void in my routine, my process of being functional and useful. I am in a bit of a lull, akin to what retirement must feel like.
However, this does not make me obsolete, and I need to stop procrastinating and focus on parenting my young men into strong independent adults. It makes sense that this time can now be filled with more fun as a family, but also some time for my own reflection. So I am making Sunday my regular blog writing days. Part of my weekly ritual of feeling gratitude for the week I have had, processing any emotions that are taking up energy and feeling inspired for the week ahead. It will help get me out of the doldrums and learning to appreciate the gift of time that I have been given.
My youngest is following in his brother’s footsteps and instead of returning to sixth form he is attending a local training centre. This gives him the opportunity to experience working life, learn new skills and he even gets paid a little for it as well. A perfect opportunity for him to also learn about dealing with money. It’s a very exciting time and I am looking forward to seeing him thrive.
